I would love to be one of the female teens with a special ability or power, but what kinds of powers are you talking about? Do you mean like invisibility ect, or just being really good at something, or being part animal? Just want to make sure I do it right :)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. investigators believe the U.S. soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians split the slaughter into two episodes, returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again, two American officials said Saturday.

This scenario seems to support the U.S. government’s assertion ? contested by some Afghans ? that the killings were done by one person, since they would have been perpetrated over a longer period of time than assumed when Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was detained March 11 outside his base in southern Afghanistan.

But it also raises new questions about how Bales, who was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes, could have carried out the nighttime attacks without drawing attention from any Americans on the Kandahar province base.

The two American officials who disclosed the investigators’ finding spoke on condition of anonymity because the politically sensitive probe is ongoing.

Many details about the killings, including a possible motive, have not been made public. The documents released by the U.S. military Friday in connection with the murder charges do not include a timeline or a narrative of what is alleged to have happened.

Bales, 38, is accused of killing nine Afghan children and eight adults. The bodies were found in Balandi and Alkozai villages ? one north and one south of the base, in Kandahar’s Panjwai district.

Bales also was charged with six counts of attempted murder and six counts of assault in the same case.

U.S. investigators now believe that Bales walked off his base that night and killed several people in one of the villages, then went back to the base. The American officials, who are privy to some details of the investigation, said they do not know why Bales returned, how long he stayed or what he did while there.

He then slipped off the base a second time and killed civilians in the second village before again heading back toward the base. It was while he was returning the second time that a U.S. military search party spotted him. He is reported to have surrendered without a struggle.

Bales is being held in a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

There have been previous suggestions that Bales could have returned to base after the first set of shootings, but the American officials who spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday provided the first official disclosure that U.S. investigators have come to this conclusion.

Members of the Afghan delegation investigating the killings said one Afghan guard working from midnight to 2 a.m. on March 11 saw a U.S. soldier return to the base around 1:30 a.m. Another Afghan soldier who replaced the first and worked until 4 a.m. said he saw a U.S. soldier leave the base at 2:30 a.m. It’s unknown whether the two Afghan guards saw the same U.S. soldier.

U.S. officials have said Bales left the base the first time armed with his 9mm pistol and M-4 rifle, which was outfitted with a grenade launcher.

Bales’ civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, said Friday that he believes the government will have a hard time proving its case and that his client’s mental state will become an important issue. Browne has said Bales suffered from the stress of serving four combat tours.

The decision to charge Bales with premeditated murder suggests that prosecutors believe they have sufficient evidence that he consciously conceived the killings.

The maximum punishment for a premeditated murder conviction is death. The mandatory minimum sentence is life imprisonment with the chance of parole.

NC, SC state line isn’t where folks thought it was

Relatively small errors by surveyors using stakes, hatchets and mental arithmetic 240 years ago could mean the end of Victor Boulware’s tiny convenience store.

For decades, officials thought the land where the store sits was in South Carolina, because maps said the boundary with North Carolina drawn back in the 1700s was just to the north.

But modern-day surveyors, using computers and GPS systems, redrew the border to narrow it down to the centimeter. Their results put the new line about 150 feet south of the old one and placed Boulware’s Lake Wylie Minimarket in North Carolina, where the gas prices are 30 cents higher and the fireworks that boost his bottom line are illegal.

“If I end up across the line, it is going to shut this business down,” Boulware said.

On a recent weekday, nearly every car stopping to get gas or a snack had a North Carolina license plate. The $3.59 per gallon price was the only reason Aaron Taule of Belmont, N.C., stopped.

“It’s all about saving money, right?” Taule said. “If this place had North Carolina prices, I’d of just waved and passed right by.”

For most of the 14 million people in both Carolinas who live far from the state line, the new survey is an interesting tale that might bring up a joke or two. Will the people who suddenly find themselves in North Carolina have to start liking basketball more than football or renounce mustard-based barbecue sauce in favor of the styles preferred to the north?

But for the owners of 93 properties who suddenly find themselves in another state, it’s a bureaucratic nightmare. The state line determines so much in their lives ? what schools they go to, what area code their phone number starts with even who provides them gas and electricity. Small utility cooperatives in South Carolina are banned from extending services across the state line. Most of the properties in question are near Charlotte, N.C.

“I’m having a hard time being funny about this when mysterious forces bigger than you are shoving you around,” said Frederick Berlinger, who suddenly has been told that he goes to bed at night in Spartanburg County, S.C. after 15 years in what he thought was Polk County, N.C.

He studied maps when he bought more than 60 acres of land in the mid-1990s. About two-thirds was in South Carolina, but he picked the spot for his home in North Carolina. Or at least he thought he did.

The problems for Berlinger and the other property owners began before the United States was even a country, when the king of England sent surveyors to draw a boundary between the two Carolinas. His instructions in 1735 were explicit: Start 30 miles south of the mouth of the Cape Fear River and have surveyors head northwest until they reached 35 degrees latitude. Then the border would head west across the country to the Pacific Ocean. But the surveyors didn’t follow the instructions exactly, and future instructions led to the state line’s twists and turns around Charlotte and in the mountains.

The surveyors used poles and measured chains, determining what direction to head from the sun and stars, doing math in their heads, and putting hatchet blows on trees to mark the boundary. Over time, those trees disappeared, but the state line still needed to show up on maps.

‘We don’t know for certain’
For decades, mapmakers and officials in both North Carolina and South Carolina urged their states to revisit the line. The U.S. Congress set the boundary as the instructions given out by the king, not the line on subsequent maps.

“This should have been done decades ago before all this growth. People called us, we’re supposed to be the authorities on the state line and all we could say is we don’t know for certain,” said Sidney Miller, who is helping lead the survey for South Carolina.

This survey is designed to put almost all questions about where the line is drawn to rest. The boundary will be recorded with GPS coordinates and permanently marked with stakes and stones driven into the ground.

Boundary disputes in the United States are as old as the country’s founding and often get nasty. The U.S. Supreme Court has settled arguments between Georgia and Florida; Oklahoma and Texas; Missouri and Iowa. Michigan and Ohio nearly went to war in the 1830s over a strip of land.

North Carolina and South Carolina wanted to solve their problems with a little more Southern cooperation, so they created the Joint Boundary Commission nearly two decades ago.

The commission meets Friday in Rock Hill, S.C. Members are expected to work on proposals they hope will be passed in each state to grandfather in where landowners send their children to school, forgive them for back taxes they may owe and allow utilities to cross state lines to serve customers without disruption.

Jeff Langley has already spoken to members of the commission. He lives about a mile from the Lake Wylie Minimart in a subdivision that’s split by the state line. Langley bought a home 15 years ago, checking carefully that it was in South Carolina. The new state line now goes through his back deck and the house is in North Carolina.

He’s worried about a property tax increase and a potential drop in his property value. He’s asked his South Carolina House member and senator for help, but chances are he soon won’t be able to vote for either of them. He’s aggravated about the change, but is resigned to it. But the government can’t make the Clemson fan happy about it.

“I was born a sandlapper and I want to remain a sandlapper,” Langley wrote to the commission. “And there is no way in hell I am rooting for the Tar Heels.”

Once both Carolinas take action to make the transition easier for the 93 property owners, the commission will submit the new state line to the Legislature in South Carolina and the North Carolina Council of State for approval. Not approving the border could open either state up to a number of lawsuits.

The survey work isn’t finished. The team is preparing to draw the rest of the state line all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Fewer problems are expected because the area is more rural.

But the team has already checked one very important cultural touchstone. The kitschy, Mexican-themed South of the Border roadside attraction and its mascot Pedro are definitely in South Carolina.

“South of the Border is where it’s supposed to be,” Miller said. “They won’t have to dress him like a Canadian Mountie.”

B.C.’s household debt second highest in Canada

Living in British Columbia isn’t cheap (Vancouverites know that better than anyone). In fact, B.C. has the second highest household debt of all Canadian provinces (Alberta has the most). Out west, we carry an average debt load of $155,000 compared to the national average of $114,400. Statistics Canada released those numbers, based on the 2009 Canadian Financial Capability Survey, today, along with data on the characteristics of borrowers.

Other characteristics common amongst higher debt holders Canada-wide include:

  • Higher income: individuals with income of at least $100,000 averaged $172,400 in debt.
  • Higher education: university grads had an average debt that was 60 percent higher than non-grads?$145,400 versus $90,900
  • Expensive real estate: B.C. and Ontario joined Alberta in having higher than average debt, which StatsCan reports generally corresponds to higher real estate prices
  • Mortgage: unsurprisingly, those with a mortgage had high levels of debts ($161,200 per debtor) whereas renters had relatively little
  • Age: those under 45 years of age held the highest debt, $129,000 each across Canada
  • Vulnerability: of those who had less than a post-secondary education, were unmarried or in “other” family types and those with less than $50,000 in household income, the most indebted are more likely to default because they have fewer resources to deal with debt payments

Related: (Love + cohabitation) + money = total disaster?

And finally, a mortgage spells “debt” for many homeowners. Those with a mortgage were even more likely to have additional types of debt. The most common type of consumer debt was credit cards, followed by lines of credit:

REVIEW: The Prison Creative Arts Project ? [art]seen ? Arts at …

The Prison Creative Arts Project

You may have friends around campus who are involved in ?PCAP.? And seems that people who are rave about it. My sophomore year roommate took the course and now subsequently works for the on-campus organization. The experience nearly changed her entire course of study from medicine to social work. Last spring,? I attended her final project exhibition. It took place at a prison in Jackson, Michigan where she and a partner had been working for the entire semester to create? a play.. I will never forget walking in the courtyard of the jail to a small class room near the cafeteria where a group of incarcerated, middle aged men perform a play they had spent four months writing. These men had very clearly grown to admire and value my 5?2? roommate as a mentor and guide. The experience was, needless to say, incredibly formative and powerful.

PCAP is offered at UofM as both a course through the Department of English Language and Literature and by the School of Art and Design.? The course, led by professor and curator Buzz Alexander, trains students to facilitate workshops in the arts in state prisons, juvenile facilities, or Detroit high schools. Mediums include creative writing, theater,? dance, mural, music, photography, quilt making, and video. His wife, Janie Paul, teaches a corollary course through the Art school which is geared specifically toward instructing in the visual arts. Since is genesis in 1990, PCAP has facilitated hundreds of workshops and has garnered huge success in its mission.

?Our process is respect and a spirit of collaboration in which vulnerability, risk, and improvisation lead to discovery.?

?We make possible spaces in which the voices and visions of the incarcerated can be expressed.?

?We believe that everyone has the capacity to create art?

?Art is necessary for individual and societal growth, connection, and survival?

?Art should be accessible to all?

Most of the incarcerated participants in the workshops have never explored the arts provided. This, to me, is unbelievable, because hen you see the work it appears to be profoundly professional. There is a quality of depth and emotion in these pieces that communicates a potent sense of experience. Two years in a row, this exhibit has been one in which I truly lose myself in the gallery, absolutely entangled in the grit of the celebrated creations. To read bios of some of these artists, or artists from previous years, as well as see and read samples of their work, check out the PCAP website and click on ?Gallery.? There, you will also find more information the current exhibit as well as related programs that you can be involved in.

There are several important events happening on campus this week as a part of the culmination of another year of the organization?s hard work. These presentations are incredibly powerful, so don?t miss them! And if you don?t make it in time, at least take a stroll through the gallery in the Dude. The artwork is truly impressive (it is also for sale!) and will surely move you deeply as a witness.

My wife might be gay – Talk About Marriage

Please help…

I’m in the middle of what might be the end of my marriage. I’ve been with my wife for nearly 10 years. We’ve been married for 3 and a half years and we have 2 kids under 4 together.

After sensing something was wrong for some time I finally worked up the courage to ask my wife if there was anything that had gone wrong, a reason why she was pushing me away.

She told me that she has feelings for a girl that she works with and that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to pursue it.

I was in complete shock when she told me. I had no idea that she was interested in girls. She told me that she wasn’t sure if she was gay, but couldn’t deny her feelings. She had felt something for another girl before we met but those feelings faded so she thought that perhaps she was straight afterall.

She didn’t want to throw our marriage away, especially if the feelings she had were just a passing phase like before. The girl she has feelings for is also her best friend and by opening up about how she feels she was afraid she was going to lose her as a friend too.

As you might imagine I’m pretty gutted by the whole revelation. The possibility of losing my family over something I seem to have no control over is tearing me up inside.

The question asked of me was – can I live in a relationship where my partner had openly confessed to wanting to be with someone else? Live with the possibility that should their friendship evolve into something more I would lose my wife.

After spending the day thinking it over I came to the conclusion that I was prepared to work on our relationship, but only if my wife confronted her feelings for her friend and decided that she wanted to stay in this marriage. And if that was to happen she needed to cut her ties with this girl. I never wanted to be the type of husband that says “It’s her or me” but I can’t see how our marriage can survive with this other person in our life.

My wife insisted that she couldn’t decide on what she wants to do without first telling her friend how she felt. She said that it didn’t mean that she would leave if the feelings were mutual, just that she would need to consider who she wants to be with. And further to that, even if nothing came of her confession, she did not want to give up her best friend.

I asked her to go to her friend straight away and confront her feelings. I just couldn’t live with this hanging over us any longer. So she did and her friend didn’t feel the same way.

My wife now says that she wants to work on our relationship, and she will do anything to make things right. But she doesn’t want to stop spending time with her friend. She insists that I’m not her “second prize” and that she still loves me but I can’t help but feel like I am. It hurts me deeply that she would feel this way for someone else. I feel like I deserve to be with someone who isn’t confused about who she loves.

The only other option I have is to walk away. As much as that might be the best thing to do I just can’t comtemplate leaving my family. They are everything to me and without them I literary have nothing…

So I just want to know if I’m just being stupid to think that a relationship can outlast this kind of problem. If I had to leave my family I will have nowhere to go. I moved intestate to be with her and the only family we have here is hers. I have no support network, not enough money to rent a new place to stay and the only place I can go to get those things takes me too far away from my kids.

And I would like to know if anyone else thinks it’s unreasonable for her to insist on still spending time with her friend? I’m not ok with it. I feel for my wife because I know she finds it hard to make friends but I can’t accept it. Risking her family for a friendship says a lot to me about what value she places on those relationships.

I have no one talk to about this. I love my wife very much and as much as she has hurt me it wouldn’t be fair for me to “out” her confusion about her sexuality to anyone else.

I’m so confused right now. I just want to know if we can be happy again.

(AP) ? After winning five NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers, Derek Fisher chose the West-leading Oklahoma City Thunder as the team where he wants to go for No. 6.

Fisher signed with the Thunder for the remainder of the season on Wednesday, not quite a week after he was traded to Houston by the Lakers and subsequently bought out of his contract instead of playing with the Rockets.

He picked jersey No. 37, the same as his age, and hoped to play right away and perhaps be able to maintain his streak of consecutive games played.

More importantly, he wants to continue his run of postseason success.

“Right now, they sit on top of the Western Conference and I’m just hopeful that the things that I do, the things that I’ve always brought to every team I’ve ever played on, can be the right mix to help these guys continue to do whatever it is that they’re already doing,” Fisher said before the game.

The Thunder lost their backup point guard, Eric Maynor, to a season-ending knee injury in January but hadn’t made any moves to address the position. All-Star Russell Westbrook had been taking on extra minutes as the starter, with rookie Reggie Jackson taking over as his backup.

Then Fisher became available when the Lakers decided to acquire Ramon Sessions from Cleveland and promote Steve Blake to the starter. Fisher had won five titles alongside Kobe Bryant in two separate stints with the Lakers, with stops in Utah and Golden State in between.

He had played 13 of his 16 NBA seasons with Los Angeles before getting dealt away at last week’s trade deadline.

“I think that I was surprised by it, but since then I’ve very much realized that it’s not so much about what went wrong and why it happened but more so where I’m going next and the next chapter of my life,” Fisher said, declining to speak in depth about his divorce with the team until later.

Fisher figures to take over Jackson’s backup minutes, although coach Scott Brooks called the 2011 first-round draft pick one of the Thunder’s “important pieces going forward.” Fisher has averaged 8.7 points and 3.1 assists during his career and has played in 209 playoff games in 13 trips to the postseason.

“He has winner all over his DNA,” Brooks said. “You can never have enough winners in your locker room, and we have a locker room full of them. He just gives us one more winner.”

Fisher played with the Lakers when they knocked Oklahoma City out in the first round of the 2010 playoffs on their way to a second straight championship. He said he’s always respected the team because he’s observed that the players play with energy every single game.

That approach was reinforced when he met with general manager Sam Presti while he was going through the process of clearing waivers and becoming a free agent.

“It’s very clear that there’s one common goal, and that’s to maximize the abilities of every player on the team and try to bring, at some point, a championship to Oklahoma City,” Fisher said.

Oklahoma City made room for Fisher by waiving forward Ryan Reid, a second-round pick in 2010 who had played in only five games over the past season and a half.

“He’s got great poise, he’s got a great basketball IQ, great recognition on both ends of the floor,” Presti said of Fisher. “He understands the league, he’s a well-regarded corner shooter and someone that we feel like can settle you down and make plays for you throughout the body of the game.”

Presti praised Jackson and reserve Royal Ivey for filling Maynor’s minutes over the past two months well enough to give Oklahoma City the league’s third-best record, behind Miami and Chicago, heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

“We have a lot of confidence in the group that we have in place, obviously, to be where we are right now,” Presti said. “We know we can improve. … We feel like Derek’s someone that can help enhance where we are currently.”

Two-time scoring champion Kevin Durant endorsed Fisher’s arrival even before he had officially signed and envisioned him as a mentor to the young team who’s still able to hit clutch shots and defend. He was hesitant to look forward and assess Fisher’s impact on the Thunder’s championship hopes.

“You can ask as many questions as you want, but it’s a little different if you go through it yourself,” Durant said. “I’m just going to just try to pick his brain as much as I can about the game of basketball but at the same time, of course if I want to get to that goal, I’ll have to experience it myself.”
